Building on the excitement from the launch of the 2010 Mustang in November, Ford’s Special Vehicle Team has produced a 2010 Mustang Shelby GT500 for the Detroit show, the ultimate edition of America’s ultimate muscle car.

The Ford team tweaked the Shelby’s engineering and design in many ways, some significant, some miniscule, to deliver optimal performance and power. The car’s most arresting features, a larger grille up front, an aluminum power-dome hood, a new spoiler with functional Gurney flap, aren’t just about curb appeal: They improve handling and efficiency, shifting pressure toward the front of the car for the best performance at any speed.

The result is the most powerful Shelby ever, hitting 540 hp and complemented by 510 lb. ft. of torque, brought to you by a 5.4 liter dual overhead cam V-8 engine. And with updates to suspension tuning, new dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars, the Shelby is better equipped than ever to put all that power squarely in the driver’s control.

Acknowledging how distinct the Shelby is to the 2010 Mustang lineup, the design team gave it an interior to match: real leather on all seats, real aluminum on the instrument panel, luxurious Alcantara inserts on the seats and steering wheel, satin liquid chrome finish on gauge cluster rings. All in a cabin outfitted with the latest Ford technology and refined to allow just the right amount of that unmistakable Shelby noise in.

This bold new addition to the Mustang legacy hits showrooms in spring 2009.
