Combined March sales of 15,193 units by the Honda and Acura divisions represented a 6% increase over last year's sales.  The Honda Automobile Division reported March sales of 13,804 units, up 10% from last year, led by record March Civic sales.  The Acura Division reported March sales of 1,389 units, down 24% over last year.

"Despite the tragic events in Japan this past month, our sales have not been impacted thus far," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president of Honda Canada Inc.  "Our dealerships remain fully stocked with fun-to-drive and innovative Honda and Acura products for the Canadian consumer.  However, we do continue to monitor our sales and production situations on a daily basis.

"As expected, we saw a strong sales surge of Civic in the month of March.  Canadians continue to recognize the value and DQR of the best-selling passenger vehicle in Canada, surpassing the previous record by over 900 units.  With gas prices continuing to rise, consumers also appreciate the high fuel efficiency of our entire Civic line-up," added Mr. Chenkin.  "We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the all-new Canadian-built 2012 Civic coming in late April."

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted March sales of 133,650, an increase of 18.9 percent based on the daily selling rate, the company announced today. March marks the sixth straight month of double-digit sales increases for American Honda. Year-to-date sales of 307,978 represent an increase of 18.5 percent based on the daily selling rate.

Sales of fuel-efficient Honda vehicles led the division to March sales of 121,039, an increase of 20.7 percent compared to March 2010. March sales of Honda cars increased by 29.1 percent to 74,168, led by the Accord, up 11.2 percent to 33,616; the Civic, up 33.8 percent to 31,213; and the Fit, up 43.4 percent on record March sales of 6,955. Honda hybrids also posted strong sales, with the Insight up 62.2 percent on record March sales of 2,782. The CR-V, the best-selling SUV in America, posted record sales for the second straight month, up 42.7 percent to 21,998.

"While we are extremely pleased with this month's sales performance, our foremost thoughts are with the Japanese people during this difficult time," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "We know there will be challenges in the coming months as we continue to deal with supply chain issues resulting from the devastating earthquake in Japan, and we continue to appreciate everyone's patience and understanding."

Acura Division posted sales of 12,611 for March, an increase of 3.6 percent. The Acura MDX led the division with sales of 4,113, an increase of 20.7 percent, followed by the TL with sales of 3,995. RDX sales went up 21.9% at 1,297, TSX sales went down at 11.9% at 2,810 units and the RL actually went slightly up nudging close to the 200 unit mark.

"While the Insight’s interior and exterior styling is unique it’s the hybrid’s powertrain that really defines the vehicle. Power comes from Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist setup that now in it’s fifth generation combines a 1.3 litre i-VTEC four-cylinder petrol engine with a compact electric motor. Total output is 72kW with 167Nm of torque sent to the front wheels through a conventional CVT transmission. It’s a different set-up to Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive in that the electric motor can only help the combustion engine and not power the car on its own. Power is returned to the nickel metal hydride battery through a regenerative braking function on the electric motor. This helps slow the Insight and means that less load is put on the conventional brakes, explaining the old-fashioned drum brakes fitted to the Insight’s rear wheels. The bottom line with this modern set up is a quoted fuel economy figure of 4.6l/100km on the combined cycle and emissions of 106g/km. While we couldn’t quite achieve this economy number, our testing used around 5.5l/100km of petrol. But even with more spirited driving the Insight shouldn’t get too far above 6.0l/100km."

Honda's March 2011 sales in Japan have dropped upwards of 28% with some Japanese auto manufacturers like Toyota being hit hardest with a drop of 46%. It is unknown whether or not the sales drop is attributed to the Japanese earthquake that struck early in the month but my guesses are it played a major factor in sales for the Japanese. More to come ...

Honda has announced the release of the new 2011 Honda Jazz for Australians. ABS, Brake Assist, VSA and side/curtain airbags are standard equipment on all Jazz models. A mesh-like grille design along with a revised front end and LED tailights round out the exterior modifications. A satin-finish centre panel, the MID information display, USB audio and Bluetooth-mounted A-pillar are new equipment for the 2011 Jazz. Following a dismal February, Honda Siel Cars of India continues the dip with a 40% fall in sales to 3 576 in March compared to last March 2010 which had 5 928 units move from dealer stocks. 2 773 City Sedans were sold along with 152 Jazzes, 379 Civic models, 216 Accord models and 56 CR-Vs.

Honda says it will begin resuming limited production at several of its Japanese factories within the next couple of weeks. Two assembly plants will restart April 11th at half of its normal rate. When the plants restart, all of the assembly plants will be running. It will also start making parts on Monday for regions outside of Japan but the parts supply situation remains wishy-washy. Honda is not expected to resume to 100% capacity or normal levels before the earthquake until some time. More to come ...
